Bittersweet

Image:

American bittersweet, Celastrus Scandens, is a native woody-stemmed perennial vine with short, softly ovalled, slightly toothed, often shiny leaves that taper to a point. Often confused with Bittersweet Nightshade Solanum dulcamara, or with Oriental Bittersweet, Celastrus orbiculata, an invasive, Asian variety which has rounder leaves and is starting to crowd out the native variety in many American forests.

Mertensia virginica, commonly known as Virgnia bluebells, is a native woodland perennial found in most Illinois counties, including Cook County, and is featured in the Botanic Gardens Native Plant Garden. It pops up through the silla in mid-spring, and forms spreading bouquet-like plants of up to 2-1/2' tall with delicate lavender-blue flowers that bloom for up to a month.

"The Little White House" at 1722 Central St.

Image:

This was a worker's cottage that stood at 1722 Central St., just west of the former Evanston Theater building, until 2007 when it was demolished to make way for the now-delayed "Eastwood" mixed-use condominium development. It had both state and local landmark status. Note the ornate gingerbread decoration on the porch and the unusual arches above the windows.

Metra North Line Schedule Changes

Metra North Line riders who are creatures of habit may want to do a double-check or risk missing a train. Effective this last Mon., May 19, the UPRR schedules changed slightly. The former 7:27 out of Central St. now stops at 7:20; 7 other trains before 10 am alter their old stop times by a minute or two, as do some afternoon trains. Other Evanston stops are affected as well, although most Loop arrival times are about the same. Loop departure times are generally the same except that the old 6:35 now runs 9 min. later on each end.

Transit schedules may be downloaded by following the Public Transportation links in our Discover Central Street section.

False Choices on Evanston's Future

A frequent rhetorical trick is to oversimplify an issue, and then present to the audience, factfinder, or decisionmaker a false choice, usually with loaded verbiage. Henry Kissinger was a master of the "we have two choices" overdistillation; Donald Rumsfeld would frequently attempt the same thing by re-phrasing a question into an unpalatable option v. what the Administration was doing.

This tack is what one alderman employed in saying Evanston's only option is to "move forward" or else we "slip backward."
