Evanston Theatres and 1700 block of Central St., 2007

Image:

The south side of the 1700 block of Central Street, including the old Evanston Theatres I and II, as seen from the east, just east of Eastwood, in January, 2007, not long before demolition. The white storefront closest to the camera was Trullo, an Italian restaurant. Click here to see CSNA's collection of documents relating to the theatres and the 1700 block "Eastwood" project.

Deacon's Five-and-Ten

Image:

Deacon's was a general-store type business that stood at 2926 Central St. for over three decades, offering dry goods, hardware, office supplies, candy, notions, and sundries, as well as the most extensive selection of sewing and craft supplies on the Central Street business strip. This refrigerator magnet, undated, bears a 708 area code, and must be from the 1990s. Eventually, like the several small drug stores on Central St., as well as Herdrich's about a mile east, Deacon's found it hard to compete with the big chains like Osco, Walgreen's, and Target.

"The Little White House" at 1722 Central St.

Image:

This was a worker's cottage that stood at 1722 Central St., just west of the former Evanston Theater building, until 2007 when it was demolished to make way for the now-delayed "Eastwood" mixed-use condominium development. It had both state and local landmark status. Note the ornate gingerbread decoration on the porch and the unusual arches above the windows.

Chase Bank Parking Lot Circa 1970

This antique store was located in the 1900 block of Central Street, just south of the alley next to the current Hog Eye Music. The store building no longer exists; the site is now the landscaped northwest corner of the Chase Bank parking lot. This picture was taken from in front of what is now Prairie Joe's.

The "Evanston" logo disappeared sometime during the demolition process and must be a coveted possession in some local basement or frat rec room.
