Dawes Descendent Wants NU to Re-Open Dawes House to Public

One of the last surviving grandchildren of General Charles Gates Dawes wants Northwestern University to preserve her family home, Dawes House, in perpetuity for the citizens of Evanston.

In an interview posted on YouTube earlier this week, (see link at the bottom of this article) Caroline Maxey, 86, said the University must respect the wishes of her grandfather, a Nobel Prize winner and former Vice-President of the United States, who entrusted his home to Northwestern for use by the Evanston History Center.

Rogers Park Lakefront Plans on View Tonight

The Chicago parks advocacy organization, Friends of the Parks, will host a planning meeting on expansion and enhancement of the Rogers Park lakefront parks, from Devon Avenue north to the Evanston border, tonight at approximately 6:30 pm at Loyola Park, 1230 W. Greenleaf, Chicago. The meeting will review plans developed in previous Design Charrettes held in March.

Let's Discuss the Issues Not Attack Individuals re Planning

Why in the world would Bill Smith take what appears to be righteous delight in making sweeping generalizations about all Northwest and North East Evanston residents, or for that matter any it seems, any resident who lives in a singe family neighborhood, or who ask questions and demands answers as to what direction the city of Evanston is going in terms of density and planning.

It seems that that Bill thinks it is ok to say things like “density-phobic neighbors” or” status-conscious neighbors” to infer that the residents are somehow neurotic or shallow.

We should try a civil open and honest debate, how come it is so difficult?

Bill Smith posted what can only be described as a mean spirited, offensive point of view on his website in response to what Jeff Smith posted this past week on density. My response below was posted on his site this morning.

I have a bigger problem though; how do we go about having truly productive and meaningful debate about hard issues in Evanston?

Buyers' Market for Condos near Central & Green Bay?

The slowed and nervous economy, real estate market downturn, credit crunch, and general area overbuilding have resulted in a considerable inventory of condominiums near Central & Green Bay in Evanston, despite the advantages of the location and the attractiveness of the units being marketed. This sunny weekend afforded a chance to take a look at the progress of some of the offerings.
