Council Approval of Kendall College Site Subdivision Pending

Also on the Council's agenda for Monday, January 24, 2011 is approval of a plat of subdivision whereby the former Kendall College site between Lincoln and Colfax, Orrington and Sherman would be subdivided into lots for 19 single-family homes, with new alleys to provide garage access. The developer of the 3.52 acre site is Smithfield Properties, Applegate & Thorne-Thomsen, P.C.
 

Robert Crown Project Moves Forward

City Parks & Rec staffers are recommending that the City Council proceed with the next steps toward development of a new ice rink and community center facility at the location of the existing Robert Crown center east of Dodge on Main Street, including prequalifying three Chicago-area firms from among the eight companies who presented qualifications to the City in response to its nearly 400-page request for qualifications ("RFQ").

CSNA Annual Meeting

Central Street Neighbors Association will hold its annual meeting at 7:00 pm, Thursday, February 10, 2011 at the Haven Middle School auditorium, 2417 Prairie Avenue in north Evanston.  The CSNA annual meeting will precede a forum for District 65 and 202 School Board candidates that will run from 7:30 to 9:30. 
 

Water Wars Film Tonight in Wilmette

Go Green Wilmette is sponsoring two showings, today and tonight, of the award-winning film Blue Gold: World Water Wars, at the Wilmette Library, 1242 Wilmette Avenue. The documentary by Sam Bozzo has been compared to Inconvenient Truth by the Toronto Star and called "a must see film for every person on the planet" by the website greenmuze.com.

Evanston legislators split by party on death penalty

The recent historic votes on Jan. 6 and Jan. 10 by both houses of the Illinois General Assembly to abolish the death penalty in this state found the delegation representing Evanston split along party lines.

IL Property Tax Credit Intact; Board of Review Window Now Open

The revenue bill passed by the Illinois legislature early this morning, the most prominent feature of which is a temporary (four-year) increase in the tax rate on taxable income (from 3% to 5%), is reported to have kept intact the present credit by which homeowners get 5% of their property tax bill deducted from their income taxes, at the urging of unnamed suburban lawmakers.

Evanston CTA "L" Line Modernization Meeting 1/27

Assuming it can get funding, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is proposing station, track, and structural improvements to its elevated rail lines, including the Purple Line (once known as the Evanston Express). The CTA is holding four public "scoping" meetings to inform the public about the project and also get public feedback on the proposed alternatives. These meetings will also factor into the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) the CTA will file with respect to the project.
