This is an update to a piece we ran about a year ago on the McDaniel Place development on McDaniel south of Central St., across from Ackerman Park. Unlike the many stalled or unstarted projects around town, this modest-sized development seems to be proceeding steadily. As can be seen from the picture above, the exterior is built out and the brick facing complete. Probably not too long before the units are ready to show.

The first "Talking Pictures Festival" is taking place this weekend at four different locations in Evanston. Billed as Evanston's first film festival, organizers hope to make it an annual event. Over two dozen films, including many shorts you wouldn't otherwise have a chance to view, will be shown. The festival includes some entries from Evanston and Chicago area firmmakers, providing opportunity to check out the creativity of some homegrown talent.

Community members are invited to help with the annual garlic mustard weed pull at Cook County's smallest forest preserve, Dwight Perkins Woods (just west of Lincolnwood School, southeast of Ewing and Colfax) this weekend, May 2nd and 3rd. Garlic mustard is a wildly proliferating invasive plant from Europe that chokes out native plants. The most effective way of combatting it is to pull it out, by hand.
Show up either today (Saturday) or tomorrow, from 9:30 to noon, in appropriate work clothes. Volunteers will also be cleaning up some of the trash that blows in each winter.

Fronting on Emerson Avenue, 1881 Oak was the last undeveloped parcel in the Evanston-Northwestern Research Park. Developer Robert King and Carroll & Associates own or have ownership option on the site and propose to build an 18-story condominium high-rise. Despite the Evanston Plan Commission recommending against the project, the City Council in 2006 after extended and controversial hearings voted to approve. The site as of spring, 2009, remains vacant.

The current structure at 1890 Maple (on the southwest corner of Maple and Emerson) as of April, 2009. This building, constructed in 1988, was the first built in the Northwestern University/Evanston Research Park; its first tenant was the Institute for the Learning Sciences, a business in the field of Artificial Intelligence. A developer, Robert King of Carroll Properties, gained control of this site and the adjacent 1881 Oak St. parcel, and proposes to demolish this building and build a 14-story high-rise apartment building on the site, with retail space on the main floor.

This is an update on the McDaniel Place project. This picture taken about a week ago shows the progress since last June when only a block foundation was in place.
