Harley Clarke Committee and 2014 Appraisal

The city has an appraisal from 2014 which should be read by everyone interested in the Lighthouse Landing Parkland and Harley Clarke Mansion. The appraisal is only for the buildings not the land. Although the message from the city is that the building is crumbling and will cost millions and millions of dollars to make it safe. The appraisal restates that code compliance issues are around $250,000 and other costs for tuck pointing and windows are between $75-$125 square foot renovation. 1.4-2.5 million. not the 5-10 millions numbers being tossed around. The most interesting data stated that:

"Based on this analysis, the highest and best use of the subject property is a public cultural, recreation or educational use consistent with the existing zoning." 

Why has our city not made this finding one of the cornerstones of discussions. Hmmm might there be other interests at play.

Light House Landing Park and Mansion Great Investment

Back in 1963 the  city council made a wise decision and invested $255,000 for a 4 acre parcel of lake front land which today would have a market value far in excess what Evanston  afford or  dream to  purchase. All up and down the North Shore, without a doubt,  the most expensive land  sold is on Michigan Shoreline in Illinoi. There are no private commercial ventures on the Ilinois Shoreline which is a concept which has been embraced by our neighbors to the North and South in line with Burnham Plan which is so dynamic and environmentally sound.  Evanston prides itself on it's lake front beach and parks  and would hopefully continue to do so.

Central Street Neighbors Association Position Statement on Harley Clarke Mansion

The following resolution was adopted by the Board of Directors of the Central Street Neighbors Association on April 1, 2015.

"The Central Street Neighbors Association believes that the parkland, beachfront, gardens, the Harley Clarke Mansion, and accompanying structures located on the shores of Lake Michigan at Lighthouse Beach and adjacent parks are priceless and irreplaceable public assets.

CSNA supports and urges their continued public use and conservation as recommended in the Evanston Lakefront Master Plan of 2008.

Plan Commission Hearing on 1620 Central Street Planned Development Set for March 11

The Planned Development proposed for 1620 Central Street has been scheduled for a hearing by the Evanston Plan Commission. The Plan Commission has given public notice that the hearing will be held on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at 7:00 PM in the Council Chambers at the Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Avenue.

John Myefski, Myefski Architects, has applied for a Special Use for a Planned Development in the O1-Office District and oCSC-Central Street Overlay District to construct a four-story (45 feet high) multiple-family building with 47 residential units and 54 underground parking spaces.

Myefski is seeking site development allowances for:

  • The number of parking spaces:
  • Required step-back for the 3rd and 4th floors from Central Street
  • A landscape buffer zone for the loading dock in the rear
  • The building height over transitional height plane requirement along the south property line.

In addition, the public notice of the hearing stated that Myefski "may seek, and the plan commission may consider, additional Site Development Allowances as may be necessary or desirable for the proposed development."

The Plan Commission makes a recommendation to the City Council, which is the final determining body for the proposal.

Historic House Move set for March 5 on Green Bay Rd., Central St., and Crawford Ave.

Weather-permitting, on Thurs., Mar. 5, beginning around 6 a.m., the historic John Van Bergen Irving House, which has been temporarily housed in Whole Foods Store parking lot north of Central on Green Bay Road, will be moved to its new "HOME" location on Crawford Ave. near Glenview Road.
