Celebrate Winter at Canal Shores Winterfest on Jan. 17

Your community golf course is open for winter fun! The 2016 Winterfest will feature fun activities for the entire family, including snow shoeing, Cross Country skiing and fat tire bikes.  

Join Canal Shores and the City of Evanston for the second annual Winterfest. This year's event is set for Sunday, January 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the course - 1030 Central Street.

There will be free activities, refreshments and snacks - including a chili cookoff!

If you have any questions, or would like to sponsor an activity, contact Canal Shores Business Manager Dan Bulf (dbulf@canalshores.org). To volunteer, or if you would like to enter the chili contest, contact Julie Ward (wardjulie4@gmail.com).

Snow shoes are free; skis and bikes will be available for rent. Apres ski at the American Legion too!

Mayor Tisdahl to Host Special Meeting in the 7th Ward

With the resignation of Ald. Jane Grover as 7th Ward Alderman, the City has announced that Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl will convene a community meeting on January 12 at 7 p.m. in the Parasol Room at the Civic Center (2100 Ridge Avenue) to discuss the process of filling the vacancy for the current term ending in 2017. 

Mayor Tisdahl will ask residents about qualities they want in their new alderman and will respond to questions.  More information can be found at the City website at this link. 

As of December 22, Mayor Tisdahl reported that the following individuals  had expressed an interest in serving as alderman:

  • Mary Rosinski
  • Eleanor Revelle
  • John Zbesko
  • Carl Bova

On Dec. 4, Evanston 7th Ward Ald. Jane Grover announced her resignation effective December 31 to accept the position of Outreach Principal at the  the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning .  At CMAP she will oversee engagement with regional elected officials, civic and business groups. CMAP is the official regional planning organization for seven northeastern Illinois counties. 

In her announcement, Grover said, “I look forward to serving our larger, regional community by helping to advance CMAP’s mission."

Election of Directors to the Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association

The Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association has announced the election of new Board members for 2016. The election was held Nov. 19 at a meeting of the Board of Directors. Members elected from Evanston are Mike O’Connor, Joe Rickard, Jay Ryan Ray Tobin and Perry Weinberg. Continuing to serve are: Chris Carey, Kevin Kane, Tom Mann, Mark McCarthy, Tim Pretzsch, Jeff Stewart and Debbie Weixl. Elected to represent Wilmette on the Board are: Karl Leinberger and John Powers.

National Small Business Saturday is this week!

CSNA joins with our community in supporting Evanston's Central Street Businesses on November 28.

The City of Evanston is promoting shopping at Evanston's small, local shops in various business districts, including West Village, Central Street, Chicago/Main/Dempster, and Downtown Evanston. Special holiday deals, events and small business videos can be found at shopevanstonfortheholidays.com.

CSNA urges residents to comment on three current issues in our community:

1. Breakwater structures (comment by Dec. 11)

The resident at 2715 Sheridan Road has filed an application to construct breakwater structures extending 125 feet into Lake Michigan. This application is pending before the Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR). You can find the DNR Public Notice and the application at this link.
