Those of us near the golf course received a notice this week about a meeting to be held on Thurs., July 17th at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall on Central Street with Ald. Tisdahl and golf course officials to seek input on their proposal to permit parking on the golf course during NU football games. Clearly this is a financial consideration.

You only have to observe a few minutes on Central Street to see many examples of pedestrians crossing the street at points other than the marked crosswalks, regardless of oncoming traffic. Note that this is done by people who only a few minutes before were themselves drivers. Here a fellow who just parked at the municipal lot walks directly toward the Starbucks.

Crossing anytime, anywhere is the norm for many Central Street shoppers. This pedestrian, talking on a cell phone, is nowhere near a crosswalk but is taking the most direct route from her car to her destination. Image slightly altered for privacy considerations.

Some think Central Street is dangerous. These pedestrians obviously disagree, feeling secure in crossing the street in front of an oncoming bus, at a non-crosswalk, at the height of the 5:00 pm rush.

Bike commuters unable to find a space at the over-capacity Metra bike rack use the Chase Bank racks, and then scramble to compete for street sign and light posts. These, too, are usually full by morning. Note: these are bikes being used for transportation, not recreation. Click here to read related forum post.

Another Central Street shopper strolls leisurely into traffic, in front of a huge truck, in the middle of the block, despite a light at Hartrey, a painted crosswalk in front of Foodstuffs, and a painted and coned crosswalk at Prairie. Oh, and you might not be able to see it, but the driver of the sedan is talking on her cell phone.

Two pedestrians on Central Street, ignoring the crosswalk about 15 feet west of them, play "Dart Out in Front of the CTA Bus." Taken at approximately 5 pm.
