Construction of Central Station Apartments continues

Construction of the Central Station Apartments is moving ahead quickly and developers estimate the project to be finished by May or June 2013. By its finish, the project will include 80 luxury apartments and 10,500 square feet of retail space.

The site, which was home to the old Evanston Theatre, has been vacant since 2007. The project was long-delayed after few of the initial condo units proposed managed to pre-sell. The project re-emerged as an 80 unit apartment building, triggering resident concerns about parking overflow into the neighborhood.

Bob Horne of Dodge Captial, the developers of the project, said that these concerns were addressed by adapting the project (and the name of the project) to be more transit-oriented. Central Street, home to CTA and Metra rails, has long been known as a transporation hub. Horne said future residents of the building will greatly benefit from the proximity of Central Street amenities without need for a car.

The site will include an I-GO or Zipcar lot in hopes to accommodate residents who only need a car occasionally, Horne said.

At least one restaurant will also be housed in the Central Station Apartments building, Horne said, although the developers have not officially announced any retailers yet.
