O"Connor Conducts "Historic" Listening Survey Of Most 7th Ward Businesses

For the benefit of whoever is elected the next alderman of the 7th Ward and the commercial businesses of the 7th Ward, I have conducted a 5 day listening tour of 7th Ward businesses. I visited about 75 businesses, however some owners and managers were not there, so I will have to add their comments later. I also did not stop in at doctors, dentists or real estate offices due to time constraints. I am sure that there are issues within some of those businesses and it may be easiest to get e-mail addresses and ask for comments.
Upon entering all businesses, I identified myself as 1 of 3 candidates running for alderman of the 7th ward. I also stated that I was not there looking for money ( I do not accept donations) or votes, but that I was there to listen to what the City of Evanston was doing that was good, what the City was doing that was bad or any comments in between. Just as I have in other areas of my campaign, I decided that this was a good, common sense way to hear the real issues confronting 7th ward businesses and given my background in sales and mangement with Bally Mfg., Marshall Field's and Carson Pirie Scott I am truly the only candidate that has the background, experience and long successful track record in dealing with the public from the retailer's point of view.
Before imparting the results of my listening tour, let me say that most owners and managers were stunned that anyone was coming out to ask them how they were doing, what was going well with the City and what was going poorly. The most shocking discovery was that only 4 businesses knew of Ald. Tisdahl as a customer or were happy with her as alderman. Other than those 4 businesses none of the other businesses had any visit from Ald. Tisdahl, City staff or the Evanston Chamber of Commerce! It's hard to believe that this is Ald. Tisdahl's record since 2003, but I challenge our current 7th ward alderman to respond to any of her business constituents comments.  However, she's in good company, as one business told me: "I've been here for 57 years and the City hasn't done s--t for me!" One other great quote from an owner was: "What's wrong with you? Why do you care now, when no one has ever come out?" I did tell all respondents that I would be out quarterly if elected, however whoever is elected this Tuesday, should know that there are now expectations from the shamefully ignored 7th ward tax paying businesses. I also told the businesses that the only time that a business usually hears from the City is, if the City has a complaint or the business has a complaint. My style is to be proactive and not reactive and also to have a dialog during a non-complaint charged time. All comments that were expressed are anonymous, so that the businesses would feel the abilty to be honest without retaliation from their government.

There you have it, so far. I will add the other comments once they are received. There are plenty of issues and concerns that our 7th Ward taxpaying businesses would like to see addressed by their alderman and City staff. This is part of why taxes are paid, if elected I will provide the services and ongoing dialog that these constituents have been missing. I will trust that both of my opponents will do likewise, I've provided them and the City with a good start.

Thanks, Kevin, this is useful information and the type of proactive citizen involvement and initiative CSNA tries to promote. It's disappointing that there was so little positive;  you were asking specifically about COE functions, I take it? because many merchants seem happy with Evanston as a community. I also note that your survey period has been a horrible period for retailers, everywhere. But it'd be great to see a more regular, more formal survey of this type, whether by the alderman or a joint project of CSNA/CS Merchants, especially when there's no cost to the City.

Jeff,
I'm glad you like the information. As hard as it might be for you to believe (given your endorsements) I let the owners and managers speak for themselves, I didn't editorialize or mention Ald. Tisdahl's name. I simply reported what I was told, I did straight reporting that is so lacking in print and online venues in Evanston. I asked what the COE was doing good, doing bad, or in between. They were free to say whatever they wanted and were told that the comments would not be connected to businesses and/or individuals, due to anonymity.
I don't know Jeff where you get " many merchants seem happy with Evaston as a community", I copied the merchants comments down exactly as they were told to me. Perhaps the merchants are not happy. There is no doubt, that this is a tough time for all businesses everywhere, not just retail, but we all know that. This does not invalidate or change their comments. These are their comments.
I went into this proactive listening survey Jeff as a 7th Ward aldermanic candidate and a concerned citizen with no expectations as to what would be said or what would happen. I feel this is part of an alderman's job and the fact that your endorsed candidate for mayor hasn't done this in her 6 years is troubling to me? There is a cost to the City of Evanston, Jeff, it's 12,000.00 dollars a year and family health care for only $37.00 a month for an alderman. Why wasn't this done by Ald. Tisdahl? All alderman that I knew growing up in Chicago knew all the businesses, plus the residents. This out of touch reality under Ald. Tisdahl's aldermanic tenure is directly contrary to your stated endorsement goal of having politicians that are more responsive. If Ald. Tisdahl isn't accountable for the issues and concerns expressed by these businesses Jeff, who is? Don't these businesses have a claim on her service and representation for the taxes they've paid?  Neither Jane Grover or John Zbesko have done this kind of hard work during this campaign or even had the imagination to conceive of the horribly radical act of actually opening oneself up to actually listening to business constituents at their own locations. How does one know what the issues and concerns are without doing this, often. For once, there can't be any "spin" or "whitewash" put on this failure of aldermanic leadership, these are not my comments, but the businesses own comments. We don't need a more formal survey Jeff, only an alderman that actually does their job, unlike Ald. Tisdahl. Could I actually be the only candidate to really do the job the right way? Look, I've already started!

Still A Candidate For 7th Ward Alderman, At Least For 18 Hours More

Kevin - nice piece of hard work on your part!
Alot of work and alot of information, We all know you don't have the machine working for you, or many of the other incompetents who run the city behind the scenes!

I'm glad somebody gets the effort of what this took to do, Junad. I haven't been getting many compliments lately, Junad, not to mention endorsements ( I must be doing something right ). A compliment from you is greatly appreciated and cherished.
Kevin

Kevin,

I think you are on the right track to be concerned about the businesses in our neighborhood.  The businesses along Central Street are part of what make our neighborhood vibrant and interesting.  Perhaps because  many of them do not live and vote in Evanston, their issues are not heard.

It seems from your listening survey that our city needs to do more listening as well, from the alderman and mayor to the city departments and staff.
