Last Days of the Evanston Theatres

A flickr user going by BWChicago has posted about 70 pictures of the last days of the Evanston Theatre (originally the Stadium) in an album on the flickr website. His/her album includes many shots of the demolition as well as interior pix of the old Evanston I and/or Evanston II. There's some interesting history as well as user reminiscences in the discussion of the theaters at the "Cinema Treasures" website on them. That website tries to document the disappearing old historic movie houses of the country and takes a sympathetic, preservation-oriented stance.

Christopher Hart, 6th Ward Alderman Candidate

Happy New Year!

Since I filed to run for Alderman in the 6th Ward, I’ve been asked nearly every day—“Why are you running?”

My answer is simple: I’m running to help build and lead a community of value.

A community of value means your opinions are solicited and respected—and not just in times of crisis. I believe deeply that involvement brings connection and personal satisfaction well beyond the routine city services we expect.

Bank Robbery on Central Street

According to Evanston police officers, the Harris Bank branch at 2821 Central St. was robbed in broad daylight today. I came home about 1:30 to find the neighborhood speckled with squadrols and unmarked cars. Purportedly the perpetrators were two males, one in a brown sweatsuit and carrying a large gym bag.

Mosquitoes and Evanston

Three years ago, I asked Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin for ideas on how I might contribute to public service. He suggested a trusteeship on the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District (NSMAD) board. “Mosquitoes?”, I replied, “What do I know about mosquitoes?” Experience as an entomologist was not required. Instead, I was asked to serve because of my financial background and my recent experience as President of the Democratic Party of Evanston.
