Approximately 80 citizens, mainly but not exclusively 7th Ward residents, turned out to an animated April. 24 meeting in the Civic Center's Parasol Room organized by Ald. Liz Tisdahl (7th). The main event was the introduction of the new Public Library Director, Mary Johns.
Johns was warmly received by the crowd when, amidst several pleas by residents that the city cease its annual threat to close the branch libraries, she assured residents of her belief in multiple venues for a municipal library system. She said that in one of her previous assistant library director positions, her department had refrained even from using the designation "main library" but had instead referred to the "downtown" library to reinforce the importance of all the branches.
A lively discussion turned on a subsequent topic, the now-38-story Focus Development skyscraper project proposed for 708 Church St. While one resident spoke in favor of the project, most speakers were opposed, and Ald. Tisdahl indicated that she was not happy with the proponents' request for $3 million in city TIF funds, nor with the lack of public benefits accruing from the project.
Several residents expressed dismay with general city policy or actions having to do with lack of transparency or irrational fiscal decisions. The alderman did not argue.
The overall tone of the meeting was relaxed and friendly rather than the accusatory or defensive exchanges sometimes seen at meetings of residents and Council members. One resident thanked the alderman for hosting the meeting and keeping the neighborhood informed, and her remarks were greeted with general applause.
City Manager Julia Carroll was in general attendance, tho she did not participate directly. My general impression was that although no great revelations occurred, most attendees felt the meeting provided some useful insights and exchanges of information, and that such ward meetings are a good exercise in trust-building as well as communication between City government and residents.
