 Evanston Fire & Life Safety Services to Host Open House to Show-off New "Green" Engine

Evanston, IL – Evanston Fire & Life Safety Services will be hosting an open house to show off its new "green" engine. The open house will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Evanston Fire Station 5, 2830 Central Street. The public is invited to join us and get a first-hand look at Engine 25.

For the past few weeks, City of Evanston firefighters have been outfitting and getting the department's new fire engine ready to be placed into service. Engine 25, a 2012 Pierce Engine/Pumper, is a new generation, greener fire apparatus that leaves a very small carbon footprint. Disappearing are the days of engines belching dark smoke as this new engine actually cleans its own exhaust, emitting only water and nitrogen into the atmosphere.

“It is a perfect fit for our community and will be responding to calls from Fire Station 5, which opened in 2008,” said Fire Chief Greg Klaiber.

Engine 25 will be equipped with a compliment of medical and fire equipment. This new engine can pump 1,500 gallons of water per minute from a 500-gallon water tank. Built to new National Fire Protection Association standards, the new engine features LED lighting, a computer terminal for receiving incident information and state-of-the-art technology.

Evanston Fire Station 5, located at 2830 Central, achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification at the GOLD level under the NEW CONSTRUCTION rating system. This was the first fire station with LEED certification in Illinois.
