On Sunday, September 9, Fr. Peter Heidenrich was officially installed as Pastor of St. Athanasius Church by Bishop Francis Kane.

Central Street Neighbors march in annual parade

Image:

Central Street Neighbors Association marched for the sixth year in a row in Evanston's Fourth of July Parade. This year, the CSNA float showcased Opening Doors, a band made up of Haven Middle School students. The band played hits such as "Birthday" by The Beatles and "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People. The band, the many CSNA marchers and the countless Evanston spectators enjoyed the city-wide celebration of Independence Day...even through the heat!

Central Street Station perimeter fencing, June 2012

Image:

Preparations for the construction of what is now called the Central Street Station four-story multi-use retail and apartment project on the southwest corner of Eastwood & Central in Evanston began in June, 2012. Picture taken in late afternoon on 6/13/2012.

Cartouches at 2800 Central

Image:

These carved stone cartouches were affixed to the exterior of 2800 Central (originally a restaurant, then a West Coast Video, then a Blockbuster Video, and now a restaurant again) believed to date from the early 20th Century or earlier, salvaged from a demolished building, and earned it a mention by Landmarks Illinois as a noteworthy "preservation resource." However, since the time I posted this, the building got a makeover and apparently these pieces could not be salvaged. Sic transit, etc.

Open for Business

Image:

The businesses of the Middle Business District on Central Street, between 2700 and 3100 W. Central, did a pretty good job of getting back and operating after the blizzard of Feb. 1-2, 2011. Here a clean path has been carved, like a snow arroyo, along the sidewalk in front of the block that includes Hartigan's Ice Cream and Mike's Shoe Repair.

Evanston Public Library North Branch

Image:

The popular North Branch of the Evanston Public Library is an anchor of the Central Street commercial district between Hartrey and Eastwood, and with the Main Branch two miles or farther away for many, provides invaluable library outreach and services to neighborhood residents. A large percentage of patrons walk or ride a bike to the North Branch.

Bike rack, Central & Stewart

Image:

This little-used vintage bike rack adorns the northwest corner of Central Street and Stewart, across from the block of shops and storefronts that includes the North Branch of the Evanston Library. Most bicyclists seem unaware of it.

Grosse Point Lighthouse and Keepers' House

Image:

The historic 113-foot-tall Grosse Point Lighthouse, built in 1873 after a number of shipwrecks, is located at the intersection of Central Street and Sheridan Road, marking the easternmost edge of the Central Street Neighborhood. The tower is an iconic symbol of Evanston whose image graces the city seal. The tower and former lighthouse keepers' residence, shown here as seen from the sidewalk abutting Sheridan Road, are open for tours in the summer.

Rain Garden Discussion at North Branch Library

Image:

Ald. Jane Grover and neighborhood residents discuss the proposed Howell Park rain garden at a community meeting at the North Branch Library in March, 2010. Forestry chief Paul D'Agostino looks on.

Pipe of Death

Image:

Pipe jutting out from railroad embankment fence on northbound Green Bay at the canal, in the summer of 2009. A real potential hazard for bicyclists especially at night. This pipe was apparently a section of fence that someone stuck into the fence after a repair. It would periodically inch its way out, and then eventually it would be shoved back, and the cycle would repeat over some months. After I posted this pic on this site, the City of Evanston sprung into rapid action, and the pipe disappeared for good.
