Multimodality in Action

Image:

You only have to observe a few minutes on Central Street to see many examples of pedestrians crossing the street at points other than the marked crosswalks, regardless of oncoming traffic. Note that this is done by people who only a few minutes before were themselves drivers. Here a fellow who just parked at the municipal lot walks directly toward the Starbucks.

Pedestrian Traffic on Central Street

Image:

Crossing anytime, anywhere is the norm for many Central Street shoppers. This pedestrian, talking on a cell phone, is nowhere near a crosswalk but is taking the most direct route from her car to her destination. Image slightly altered for privacy considerations.

Pedestrians Create Own Pedestrian Mall on Central

Image:

Some think Central Street is dangerous. These pedestrians obviously disagree, feeling secure in crossing the street in front of an oncoming bus, at a non-crosswalk, at the height of the 5:00 pm rush.

Bike Storage at Central & Green Bay

Image:

Bike commuters unable to find a space at the over-capacity Metra bike rack use the Chase Bank racks, and then scramble to compete for street sign and light posts. These, too, are usually full by morning. Note: these are bikes being used for transportation, not recreation. Click here to read related forum post.

Pedestrians Ignore Crosswalks, Pt. 2

Image:

Another Central Street shopper strolls leisurely into traffic, in front of a huge truck, in the middle of the block, despite a light at Hartrey, a painted crosswalk in front of Foodstuffs, and a painted and coned crosswalk at Prairie. Oh, and you might not be able to see it, but the driver of the sedan is talking on her cell phone.

Crosswalks Ignored By Pedestrians, Pt. 1

A pedestrian crosses in the middle of the 2100 block of Central Street at rush hour toward the parking lot, stepping in front of a cement mixer.

7-Eleven

7-Eleven ceiling lights are brighter than the afternoon sun on the parking lot.

Canyon, Patched

Image:

The crevices on the north side of the 2000 block, of Central (alongside Independence Park) shown in the previous picture, filled with patching material instead of resurfacing. Not sure why. But it's still an improvement. For a "before" picture, click here.

Not So Grand Canyon

Image:

An example of the dangerous crevices, several inches deep in spots, that challenged bicyclists until the recent resurfacing and patching. Note how the location is right where a bike needs to go. To see what was done to this stretch of road, click here.
