Berglund Animal Hospital Seeks Makeover OK

On Tuesday May 5, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. in City Council Chambers, the Zoning Board of Appeals will hear an application by Berglund Animal Hospital to operate as a special use in a C2 commercial district.  Berglund is at 2525 Gross Point Rd. (Gross Point and Old Orchard).

An animal hospital is not a defined use in a C2 district, but Berglund has historically not needed a special use permit because they were operating in that location before (way before) the 1993 Zoning Ordinance that established used for various districts.

They are making an application at this time because they propose to demolish their current facility and build a new and larger facility.  They are not asking for zoning variances as apparently the new building will be within the zoning requirements for a C2 district.  As the old building they operated in will be removed, they will need a special use permit to rebuild and continue operations as an animal hospital.

They are also doing this without asking for funds from the City, which seems to be the norm these days.

I would hope the City would have enough sense to grant this special use permit.  Berglund has been operating there as long as I can remember (and that’s a long time) and have been a very good neighbor.

I don’t know when this would be brought before the City Council, but if you can at all attend the ZBA meeting I would urge you to do so and support this application.
