The Daily Northwestern: Grover for 7th Ward

We endorse Jane Grover, former chairwoman of the Evanston Mental Health Board, for 7th Ward alderman.

Grover's experience with the board and other local groups gives her extensive institutional knowledge, which the city sorely needs in an election that will bring us a new mayor and at least four brand-new aldermen.  Her ideas to deal with Evanston's budget crisis are practical, as is her emphasis on changing the discourse between Evanston and Northwestern.

We also wholeheartedly support her efforts to include students in the 2010 Census, which could ensure that the students' voice is heard in municipal government.  Grover is pragmatic, precise and knowledgeable.  She has the kind of no-nonsense attitude the Council needs.

Grover's opponents include John Zbesko, whose business know-how is impressive but limited to financial expertise; and Kevin O'Connor, whose confrontational style would not lend itself to constructive dialogue.
