Deacon's Five-and-Ten

Deacon's was a general-store type business that stood at 2926 Central St. for over three decades, offering dry goods, hardware, office supplies, candy, notions, and sundries, as well as the most extensive selection of sewing and craft supplies on the Central Street business strip. This refrigerator magnet, undated, bears a 708 area code, and must be from the 1990s. Eventually, like the several small drug stores on Central St., as well as Herdrich's about a mile east, Deacon's found it hard to compete with the big chains like Osco, Walgreen's, and Target. The store was, however, sorely missed by many who appreciated not having to drive miles for similar goods.
