Wild Geraniums Populate Perkins Woods

The blooms are now almost completely gone, but if you had a sharp eye out this spring, you would have noticed an unprecedented outcropping of wild geraniums along the trails in Perkins Woods as seen above in late May, 2026. Possibly they were seeded by squirrels, but I suspect this may have been the handiwork of the volunteers who have been working the past decade to restore the landmark preserve, named for iconic architect Dwight Perkins, with many of the species that used to be widespread throughout Cook County. Wild geranium tends to bloom just around Memorial Day, so keep an eye out next spring to see if they return.
