Bloodroot blooming in April

Pretty, delicate, blooms of bloodroot, Sanguinaria canadensis, typically appear between early and late April depending on moisture and temperature, a few inches off the ground, and last for a week or two before the much bigger lovely green leaves fan out.

For more about bloodroot and native plants for the Midwest, especially those that do well in shade/moist areas, see the "book" on this website, Gardening with Native Plants in Shady Evanston.
