Free compost bins, while they last

Evanston's Public Works department is offering Evanston residents free plastic composting containers, repurposed from black 95-gallon municipal garbage containers with the wheels removed. Over two hundred are available while supplies last. Each bin is delivered by the City and will comes with an instructional guide on composting. Commercial composting bins of equivalent size can cost $100 or more.

Composting is an age-old way of recycling organic waste that results in usable nutrient-rich lawn and garden supplement. Keeping solid organic material out of the waste stream saves energy and money. Some care is required to produce good compost efficiently, but the "free" product is rewarding. This initiative came from a citizen idea and shows some imagination.
