July 17 Meeting on Govern (FKA Peter Jans) Golf Course

Those of us near the golf course received a notice this week about a meeting to be held on Thurs., July 17th at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall on Central Street with Ald. Tisdahl and golf course officials to seek input on their proposal to permit parking on the golf course during NU football games. Clearly this is a financial consideration.

Multimodality in Action

Image:

You only have to observe a few minutes on Central Street to see many examples of pedestrians crossing the street at points other than the marked crosswalks, regardless of oncoming traffic. Note that this is done by people who only a few minutes before were themselves drivers. Here a fellow who just parked at the municipal lot walks directly toward the Starbucks.

Pedestrian Traffic on Central Street

Crossing anytime, anywhere is the norm for many Central Street shoppers. This pedestrian, talking on a cell phone, is nowhere near a crosswalk but is taking the most direct route from her car to her destination. Image slightly altered for privacy considerations.

Pedestrians Create Own Pedestrian Mall on Central

Some think Central Street is dangerous. These pedestrians obviously disagree, feeling secure in crossing the street in front of an oncoming bus, at a non-crosswalk, at the height of the 5:00 pm rush.
